Rian and I met in a really unexpected way…on tinder. It was ‘love at first swipe’ haha. We met after I finished uni and he had finished work at a pub in Surry Hills for a few drinks and later went to our dinner reservation at a Tapas restaurant which Rian organized. Rian arrived at the pub first and he must have been nervous because he was already drinking a beer before I got there. He said when he saw me walking up the stairs into the pub he was surprised at how short I actually was compared to my pictures and he loved I was shorter than expected haha and he also noticed my pumped up Nike shoes which he found really funny (I knew he didn’t like them), but I noticed his big smile and blue eyes. I was excited to get to know him. I realized just how genuine, funny and authentic he was, so different to everyone else I had met…what you see is what you get with Rian and I found that so refreshing. We were laughing the whole night over some sangrias, and later we walked over to Messinas for gelato and crossed the street to sit on a park bench to enjoy them. This is where we had our first kiss, that night after our gelatos! Rian was such a gentleman he even drove me back to my car, I guess he wanted to spend more time with me too!
We had spoken about getting married maybe after 2.5 years of dating. Rian always said he wanted to marry me but I would have no part or say in when he would do it and what ring I he would get. Rian wanted to surprise me when he felt the time was right and he always used to say he thought he should be the one to choose my ring, and that it would be a testament to see just how well he knew me, by choosing a ring he would think I liked. I loved that about him. So years went by and still no proposal but we would always talk about getting married. I just put it at the back of my head for the time being and I knew it would just happen at the right time.
It was a Saturday night in November at around 1am, after having a fun time at our friend’s engagement party and we both had a few drinks we stumbled home and put our Pjs on, I put on one of Rian’s old t-shirts and we just chilled out talking, laughing and just acting silly. Then, really randomly Rian stands up and tells me to close my eyes. When I open them, there he is down on one knee looking up at me with a little white box in his hands, and he opens it up and asks me to marry him! I seriously thought he was joking. I even asked him if the ring was fake. He’s a really big joker so I thought he definitely could be messing with me! He told me how much he loved me and how he wanted to have a family together and reassured me he wasn’t joking while shedding a few tears. It was such an intimate and emotional moment. We were on such a high we couldn’t sleep so we went into the lounge room watched YouTube clips from our favourite movie, A Star is Born. I couldn’t believe how perfect the ring was, he couldn’t have done better job at choosing it! Rian had bought the ring a couple of weeks before and had planned to propose on Christmas morning at sunrise at our favourite beach Bronte but he couldn’t wait and he said the moment at home just felt right and he felt uneasy hiding the ring in the bottom drawer in our bedroom and didn’t want me to find it. I didn’t sleep at all that night haha.
