We’ve been together 10.5 years. On our first date, we went to IKEA (Jack was working there at the time). As we walked through, he asked me if there was anything I might want to get – I told him I needed a bookshelf. He told me he could get me one with his staff discount. Ten years and a wedding later, we still do not have a bookshelf in our house. Jack proposed in Japan. It didn’t work out the way he had wanted it to, because we didn’t realise we had chosen the rainy season to visit. He spent all morning driving around to all five of the famous lakes at which to view Mount Fuji, with no success – it was much too overcast. We finally completed pretty much a full circuit of the region, sat in a pretty little park called Yagizaki, overlooking Lake Kawaguchi which had a floating shrine. The rain had abated for the only two minutes that it would for the rest of our time in Fuji, and we could finally see the very tip of the iconic mountain peeking out through the clouds. I cried so hard, I forgot to say yes.
